There's a truth the e-commerce industry prefers to keep quiet: buying fashion directly from large Asian platforms often means navigating uncharted waters alone. Prices are attractive. Photos are beautiful. Yet, millions of European consumers annually experience disappointing deliveries, deceptive quality, or worse—an impossible dispute to resolve with a seller halfway across the world.
At MITCH By AEF, we've chosen to speak frankly about it. Because you deserve to understand exactly what you're getting into when you buy international fashion online—and because our model exists precisely to eliminate these risks.
The online Asian fashion market: a complex reality
A huge market, a real opportunity
The online Asian fashion market represents an unprecedented opportunity for European consumers. Trendy items, produced in large quantities, at prices unattainable in traditional European retail—this is a commercial reality that has profoundly transformed purchasing habits.
Platforms that allow direct purchasing from Asian sellers have made visible what has long existed in factories in Guangdong, Zhejiang, or Seoul: considerable industrial textile production, capable of offering thousands of references at competitive prices.
But this accessibility has a downside that consumers often discover too late.
What platforms don't tell you at the time of purchase
When you buy directly from an international marketplace—without a European intermediary—you enter into a contract with a seller located outside the European Union. This detail, often invisible in the purchasing interface, has significant legal and practical consequences.
The protection of European consumer law does not automatically apply.
The European Directive 2019/771 on certain aspects concerning contracts for the sale of goods (transposed into French law by order n°2021-1247 of September 29, 2021, published in the Official Journal of the French Republic) applies to professionals established in the European Union selling to European consumers. A seller based in China, Korea, or Thailand is not subject to this directive—and therefore has no legal obligation to refund you, provide a guarantee of conformity, or handle your dispute according to European standards.
In France, the Consumer Code (notably articles L.217-1 et seq. on the legal guarantee of conformity, and L.221-1 et seq. on consumer rights in distance contracts) protects buyers against professionals established in the European Union or conducting their commercial activity there. Faced with a purely Asian seller with no legal presence in Europe, these protections become difficult to invoke concretely.
The DGCCRF (Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control), in its awareness publications on the risks of international e-commerce available on its official website dgccrf.gouv.fr, regularly reminds that French consumers who buy from sellers located outside the EU have limited recourse in case of a dispute.
The concrete risks – what buyers actually experience
Photographic quality versus textile reality
This is the most frequent, and most frustrating, discrepancy. A product photo on an Asian marketplace is generally taken in a studio, with professional lighting, often digitally retouched, and sometimes taken with a higher quality sample than the mass production.
What you receive may differ on several points:
The actual textile composition may not match the advertised one. A fabric described as "premium polyester" may turn out to be a low-grade blend with little elasticity. A material presented as "soft and breathable" may prove uncomfortable against the skin.
Colors can vary significantly due to differences in screen calibration, lighting conditions in photography, and dyeing variations between production batches. That off-white in the photo might arrive grey or yellowed.
Finishes—seams, closures, linings, elastic—are often the first to betray a quality inferior to what was presented.
The Asian sizing problem — a documented reality
The sizing systems used in East Asia are based on anthropometric data different from European standards. This is not a judgment—it's a statistical reality derived from surveys conducted on populations with different body types.
An item labeled "XL" according to an Asian manufacturer's standards may correspond to a European M or S. Without a precise size chart in centimeters, provided by a trusted intermediary, the European buyer is purchasing blindly.
Delivery times — between promise and reality
The delivery times announced on direct purchase platforms are often optimistic estimates. Actual times can vary considerably depending on suppliers, times of year (especially around the Lunar New Year holidays in China, which leads to a generalized closure of factories and warehouses for several weeks), and international logistical hazards.
An order announced "within 15 days" may arrive after 45 days—or not arrive at all.
The dispute – where everything gets really complicated
This is the moment of truth. You received an item that doesn't match the description. You want a refund. And that's where the reality of the direct market reveals itself in all its brutality.
You must:
- Contact a customer service that is often unresponsive, in a language that is not your own
- Provide photographic evidence according to complex procedures
- Negotiate directly with a seller who has no legal obligation to you under European law
- Wait weeks for a response that may be a simple refusal
- Hope that the platform's buyer protection service intervenes—without guarantee of results
For small amounts—those of everyday fashion—initiating a formal procedure is often disproportionate to the financial stake. Most buyers give up. They've lost their money. And the seller knows it.
The MITCH By AEF model: a real protective barrier
What MITCH By AEF really is
MITCH By AEF is not a platform connecting you with Asian suppliers. MITCH is a European distributor—a French legal entity—that imports Asian fashion and distributes it on the European market.
This distinction is fundamental. When you buy from MITCH, you are not buying from an Asian supplier. You are buying from MITCH By AEF, a French entity.
It is this status that creates the protective barrier—not a commercial promise, but a legal reality.
How MITCH protection actually works
The model is simple, and that is its strength:
You order from MITCH By AEF. Your sole contact is MITCH—a French store, with terms and conditions in French, a clear return policy, and a designated consumer mediator.
If the product received does not match the description—different color, incorrect size, non-compliant quality—you contact MITCH By AEF directly. In French. Without undue delay.
MITCH By AEF refunds you. It's not a negotiation. It's not a complex procedure. It's your right as a French consumer dealing with a professional established in France—and MITCH honors it.
MITCH handles the supplier on its end. The dispute with the Asian supplier, the return procedure to the source warehouse, the commercial negotiation to retrieve the merchandise or obtain a credit—all of this is handled by MITCH. You don't have to participate. You don't have to know the supplier's name. You don't have to understand Mandarin or Korean to defend your rights.
That's the protective barrier MITCH offers you.
Why this barrier is more valuable than it appears
In a market where millions of female buyers annually lose money on orders that don't meet their expectations—with no possible recourse, no refund, not even a decent response—having a French, responsible, reachable contact, legally bound to protect you, is a concrete value.
This is not marketing. This is consumer protection in its most useful form: someone who steps between you and the risk, and takes responsibility for managing it on your behalf.
What MITCH By AEF does not do and why it is important
MITCH does not hide the origin of products from you
MITCH By AEF imports fashion produced in Asia. We do not hide it—we affirm it. Transparency in the supply chain is a moral obligation and, increasingly, a legal obligation being strengthened at the European level.
The Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 on digital services (Digital Services Act) and ongoing regulations on textile traceability within the European Union are progressively strengthening transparency obligations for e-commerce players. MITCH By AEF anticipates these developments by making transparency a commercial pillar, not a constraint.
MITCH does not sell what it cannot honor
Every item offered in the MITCH By AEF universe comes with real information about dimensions, advertised compositions by the supplier, and estimated delivery times. When information is not certain, we say so. When a delay can vary, we specify it.
Because a promise you cannot keep is the beginning of a dispute you will have to manage.
MITCH By AEF: a universe, not just a store
MITCH By AEF was born from a simple conviction: Asian fashion is beautiful, varied, accessible, and European consumers deserve to access it without taking risks. Without having to learn how international logistics work. Without having to master customs duties or cross-border dispute procedures. Without sacrificing their consumer rights.
"What everyone is clamoring for"—our slogan—is also what everyone deserves to be able to buy with confidence. All styles, all budgets, all desires. A universe where thousands of items from elsewhere coexist, made accessible here, without scams, without opacity, without anyone left behind.
Welcome to MITCH.
